Roy Singh - 2009

I started running in September 1999 , initially, just to keep fit . After I had progressed to 10 km's every 2nd day , Casper Vermaak, who was training for the 2000 Comrades invited me to run with the Empangeni Athletic Club on their the Saturday morning training runs and very soon I was on my way to running my first marathon.

I ran my first Comrades in EAC colours but joined the Umhlatuze Athletic Club when it was formed in 2002. I have since then completed a further 5 Comrades and a number of other marathons. (3 Bill Rowan + 3 bronze medals).

Running is a great sport and has helped me to meet many people that I would otherwise not had the opportunity to meet. Besides helping me lead a healthier life I've found that it has helped me to realize the strength we need to have in body and mind to be able to achieve these feats of endurance.

Although I have not achieved my personal goals of a sub 3 hour marathon or a Comrades silver, I have some memorable highlights of which the following stand out.

Completing the Berlin Marathon in 2006 in 3 hours 55

Being named "Sportsman of the year" for UAC in 2004

Leading the 9 hour bus at Comrades in 2004 and the 11 hour bus in 2005 for Runner's World .This was a great experience which more people should try out sometime.

I would still like to someday run 2 Oceans , participate in an adventure run and possibly lead in a few more buses at Comrades.
