Velephi Malinga - 2007

When I was in Primary school I used to run 100 meters and play netball. As time goes on I went to a Tertiary Institution and I started playing ladies soccer, and I must say I was a good player playing at the back as a stopper. In 1996 to 1997 I was selected as the captain of the soccer team. In 1997 I was selected as one of the players to represent KZN in Port Elizabeth and we obtained position 1 and a gold medal. After my tertiary studies it was difficult for me to continue with soccer as it needs a lot of people to participate, and I decided to start running because originally I was a sports person. So I started running in 2000 with short distance races.

In 2003 I joined uMhlathuze AC with a motivation from Pinky Miya. Since I joined uMhlathuze AC I was never disappointed and I don't regret that decision because I always get motivation from members irrespective of colour they are all in one and nice to each other. In 2004 I ran the Comrades Marathon from Durban to PMB for the first time and I finished in 11h45. I must say that was very tough but I thank Jan who gave me the boost on the way and I was able to finish my first Comrades. I remember at the finish line I was dead and my kids and husband were worried thinking I was going to die the way I was tired and my whole body was shaking I mean really shaking. I had to be put on a stretch to my car because I could not stand let alone walking. But I must say it was the great experience of my life and look forward to do it again and again.

I look forward to run my second Comrades next year. My dream is to run at least 10 Comrades and to run Two Oceans.

I thank all the members of uMhlathuze for their spirit of motivation before, during and after each and every race we run together. Keep that spirit! Up the Crocs!
Thank you.
